A Favorite Album From Each Year of My Life

Because not only can I not resist a list-making exercise that underscores how old I’m getting, I also just love extracting every last shred of my mental faculty trying to remember a favorite record that was released in 1978 (’77 is another story altogether). Idolator came up with this jewel of absurdity last weekend, and after reading those from Jeff and Joseph, I couldn’t resist; I’m such a sucker for these things. I probably spent the most time juggling records of the early ’90s (when my ears were most porous), and ultimately decided not to ‘cheat’ and list more than one album per year. Sorry, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993), half a dozen R.E.M. and Smiths platters, and a slew of others. The turn of the century was tough as well, as I was neck-deep in jazz back then and couldn’t care less about what my hipper friends were buzzing about. Anyway, for what it’s worth:

I’ve been debating this idea for a while and can only assume that the rest of the internet stole my brainwaves. Damn you internet, damn you.

I avoided finishing a list because of my unfamiliarity with a lot of 1980s records, but I remember 1994 being a particularly tough year to call, although I ultimately decided on Pony Express Record as well. I think I’d have a few other similar entries (Angel Dust, Remain in Light) but seeing this list should finally force me to construct my own.

Side note: It’ll be great to see STT in October, although it’s a bummer that Wade and Hill won’t be performing in Boston.

Sebastian, I’d be really curious to see your list, if only to see how eerily similar it may be.

I’m sure I’ll be seeing you at that STT show also.

Just listening to 40 Cornerstones of Primo again. Fire!

It’s my turn on the Pete Rock thang… I got an idea but not sure how easy it’ll be. I’ll hit you by e-mail over the next few days.

Cheers,

Dan

Dan - I’ll keep an eye out for it.

That Ellen Allien record came out of nowhere. I remember stumbling through genre starter kits on iTunes and running into “Magma”. Blew me away.

Yeah, I was pretty much floored the first time I heard it.

Does iTunes really have something called “genre starter kits”?

As a huge Minutemen fan, I just want to give my standard comment that Double Nickles is way over-rated. What you want and need is Post-Mersh 1 and maybe 3.

That’s funny - my neighbor was just saying the exact same thing last night. For ‘84 it was a toss-up between Double Nickels, Cocteau Twins’ Treasure, or R.E.M.’s Reckoning. I picked Double Nickels just for shits - but I’ll be sure to check out your recommendations.

Awesome site, Flood. I picked up the Pig Destroyer record after reading about it here. Brutally awesome record. You should check out some other Scott Hull affilliated bands also. I highly recommend Agoraphobic Nosebleed’s ‘Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope’. Grindcore mania. On another metal-related note: Are you familiar with the band Annal Nathrakh? Crippling black metal from England. Probably my favorite metal band ever. Keep up the excellent work here. I particulary love the beat breakdowns.

Thanks for the kind words, Clyde. The more people I can turn onto Phantom Limb, the more complete my life will be. I’ve always had Hull’s other projects on the back burner - just haven’t had the chance to check them out yet.

I’ve heard the name Annal Nathrakh, but know nothing about their music. That’s about to change, though. Speaking of black metal, what do you think of the new Nachtmystium?

Comment by floodwatch 07.11.08 @

I just want to express my love of Double Nickels on the Dime. Probably my second favorite album of the ’80s, right behind Paul’s Botique.

I’ve never heard of Nachtmystium, but I’ll definitely check them out. Anaal Nathrakh would be right up your alley, i think. ‘Total Fucking Necro’ & ‘The Codex Necro’ are the records to start with. Insane drum machine blast beats…bizzare samples…brutally catchy riffs… a sense of melodicism not usually inherent to the genre… i could go on and on. such a great band.

I kinda hate you for this post. It took me 9 hours and 32 minutes to compile a list… Those are 9 hours and 32 minutes that I could have been trying to beat the first Zelda game holding the controller upside down. Thanks a ton!

Again. Great post.
